How did you get into what you do?

Growing up, I had a very varied upbringing because my dad was a journalist and then a diplomat, which meant we lived all over the world. This exposure to different cultures and environments sparked my interest in the built environment from an early age. I initially studied architecture but quickly realised I was more interested in the coordination and project management aspects of the field. My competitive nature and desire to give back to society have always driven my career choice. The idea of creating places that bring people together and enhance their lives has always been a key motivator for me. Living in cities like Istanbul, with its rich cultural tapestry, inspired me to pursue a career where I could contribute to the development of vibrant, functional spaces that improve people's quality of life.

Why Mace?

My journey with Mace began 12 years ago when I moved from Australia to the UK just as the Olympics were happening. It was an exciting time, and I was thrilled to join Mace. When I moved over from Australia, I knew I wanted to work with the best of the best and I knew that Mace had that reputation. It felt like the type of business where I could have an exciting and varied career. Over the years, I’ve moved into various roles, each offering new challenges and opportunities to make a difference. The dynamic environment at Mace and the chance to work on projects that have a real social impact have kept me motivated and engaged.

How has your role evolved over the years at Mace?

My role at Mace has evolved significantly. I was initially deployed in our ambitious schools programme, and after six years took time out to welcome my first child. My time out allowed me to reflect and plan for my next move to grow my career within the business. I returned to lead our housing and regeneration business in London, where I worked closely with Caroline Lassen, who has been a huge sponsor to me in my career. I then took on the role of Program Director for a project with the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) for which Mace was the Delivery Partner and later became the Account Director. Most recently, I’ve taken on the role of Local Government Regional Lead for the South, which builds on my previous experiences and allows me to continue making a positive impact.

Each position has provided me with new challenges and opportunities to learn and grow, reinforcing my commitment to delivering projects that benefit the community.

What has been your proudest achievement at Mace so far?

Serving as the Program Director for the MoJ Delivery Partner commission made it one of the most impactful projects I've worked on at Mace. This role was challenging but incredibly rewarding, as it allowed me to grow both professionally and personally. Leading such a major programme of work taught me a great deal about the complexities of project management and the importance of collaboration and adaptability.

Another significant experience was my involvement in delivering schools in deprived areas. This work was both challenging and fulfilling, as it underscored the importance of creating places that provide children with the right start in life.

These projects have reinforced my commitment to delivering work that has a lasting positive impact on communities and have shaped my approach to project management and leadership.

What motivates you everyday?

Variety and working with great people keep me excited. Mace is known for its talented and hand-picked team, and I feel privileged to be part of it. The projects we deliver and the positive impact they have on communities are incredibly motivating. Additionally, being a role model for my children and showing them the importance of hard work and dedication is a huge driver for me. The idea of creating places that my children can be proud of and that make a difference in people's lives is what keeps me enthusiastic every day. My family is so important to me – I feel a strong sense of responsibility to leave this earth in better shape than I found it in!

What skills do you need to be good at your job?

Adaptability is crucial, along with being both approachable and a good listener. It's important to be able to think strategically and plan for the future while being flexible enough to navigate challenges as they arise. Thinking on your feet and being agile are essential skills in my role, as they allow me to respond effectively to unexpected situations and make quick, informed decisions. Building strong relationships and being a problem solver are also key aspects of my role.

What are you passionate about outside of work?

Outside of work, my greatest passion is spending quality time with my family. We love getting into the outdoors, whether it's sea swimming, running in the New Forest, or building sandcastles at Avon beach. These activities not only keep us active but also allow us to bond and create lasting memories. I have a deep appreciation for architecture which often influences our travel destinations. Exploring amazing buildings and landscapes around the world is a joy for me, as it combines my professional interests with my love for adventure.

If you hadn’t got into this line of work what do you think you might be doing?

If I hadn't pursued a career in project management and architecture, I could see myself as an archaeologist or a historian. The idea of uncovering the past and piecing together historical narratives fascinates me. Shows like "Digging for Britain" and "Antiques Roadshow" are my guilty pleasures, and I often joke that I'm old before my time!

Alternatively, I might have followed in my father's footsteps and become a broadcaster. He was a wonderful role model, and both of my parents have greatly influenced my values and interests. Broadcasting would have allowed me to combine my love for storytelling with my passion for connecting with people, much like my current role but through a different medium.

“Mace is known for its talented and hand-picked team, and I feel privileged to be part of it. The projects we deliver and the positive impact they have on communities are incredibly motivating.”
