Operations Director, BIM, Consultancy, UK

Mobeen is a Building Information Modelling (BIM) Operations Director at Mace. He assists teams to set up project standards and monitor quality control, and manages BIM on several projects, including data validation and clash detection.


With responsibility for the development of the Mace BIM Strategy, Mobeen is working to ensure Mace meets the processes required to deliver the UK Government’s BIM mandate for Level 2 by 2016.

How did you get into what you do?
Since working in a multidisciplinary consultancy environment from 2003, I found that the lack of design coordination and unclear, or missing, project information caused major delays to most projects. I was always championing a more integrated approach so the UK Government BIM initiative provided the perfect platform for me to lead improvements in this area.

What do you enjoy most about your role at Mace?
I take great satisfaction in the successful delivery of collaborative projects and always look into ways to reduce effort and maximise efficiencies. I like the combination of having a strategic role in BIM as well as a hands on implementation role in projects.

What’s your proudest achievement at Mace?

I'm very proud of the work I did at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and I also like to educate and train project managers and design team members to the UK Government's BIM Level 2 requirements. Being able to teach colleagues and other members of the team is very rewarding and makes me feel I am giving something back to the business and the wider industry.

What advice would you give to someone looking to get into what you do?

I would say communicate with as many people as possible and talk to experts about where you might fit best with your skill set. Communication is also the most important factor for integrated project delivery. To do well you need strong people skills and the ability to manage digital information.

What do you see as the big trend for your specialism in the next five years?
The industry has come on leaps and bounds since the introduction of BIM but there is always room for improvement. I think lean methods will be adapted to develop project and asset information models, and virtual testing will become more prevalent.

What are you passionate about outside of work?
I'm passionate about everything to do with the internet, technology, reading and cricket.
