With extensive experience on high-profile projects such as Crossrail, Hinkley Point C, and TfL, Andreas Carey-Bailey combines strategic vision with a hands-on approach to deliver outstanding project outcomes. His work not only drives successful project completion but also fosters community development, making a tangible difference in people’s lives.

What sparked your interest in infrastructure and transportation?

My journey into infrastructure and transportation began with a childhood love for heritage and history. Visits to ruins, museums, and especially the Transport Museum, sparked my passion for planes, trains, and the built environment.

How did this lead you to Mace?

It led me to pursue an MSc in Property Development and develop a passion for construction. When my first role on the Building Schools for Future programme was cancelled, I transitioned to Crossrail, which was a defining moment, giving me a holistic view of infrastructure. I loved being on-site at Farringdon station and witnessing the Tunnel Boring Machine’s breakthrough at Woolwich station.

After that, I worked at Hinkley Point C, supported the Northern Line Extension and Renewals and Enhancements with TfL, and worked across over 100 projects. My time with Network Rail included remodelling Euston Conventional Station and preparing for the HS2 terminus.

What do you enjoy most about your current role at Mace?

It’s the dynamic interaction with our clients. I enjoy talking to them to establish their needs and share my knowledge, whilst being flexible and handling different issues quickly and effectively.

Working with various client teams keeps things exciting and ensures I’m always learning and adapting. Supporting TfL is particularly rewarding. Being part of projects that enhance London’s transport infrastructure and improve daily commutes for thousands of people is incredibly fulfilling.

Building our team through targeted recruitment and developing specialist skills has been incredibly rewarding. Creating a high-performing team that shares TfL’s values and tackles any challenge embodies the spirit of collaboration and excellence at Mace.

How do you redefine the boundaries of ambition?

The opportunities are endless, but I especially like to make a difference through people development. From mentoring client teams and organising knowledge-sharing sessions, to supporting the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) for chartership and becoming an RICS assessor, I see the tangible impact my actions have. It’s something I’ve benefitted from throughout my career and I’m enjoying paying it back to help other people redefine their boundaries.

Why Mace?

When I think of Mace, I see agility, entrepreneurship, and dynamism. Our unique Consult and Construct approach brings us together, allowing us to handle the entire project from start to finish.

Seeing the Mace banner on tower cranes, especially around London, reminds me I’m part of something transformative. Revitalising areas like Stratford after the Olympics shows we do more than just build structures – we also shape communities.

What has been your proudest achievement at Mace so far?

Supporting the TfL Trams Renewals Work is special to me. Growing up in Croydon, I watched the Trams network being built, and now contributing to its renewal feels like coming full circle. It's a testament to the impact we can have on our communities.

What are you passionate about outside of work?

I’m a family man, I’m active in my local church and serve as a Foundation Governor at my daughter’s school. Travelling is another a passion and, in 2017, I completed the 1000km Ho Chi Minh Motorbike Trail in Vietnam. The beauty of the country and warmth of its people will always stay with me.

"Supporting TfL is particularly rewarding, as it allows me to enhance London’s transport infrastructure and improve daily commutes for thousands of people. Being part of projects that make a tangible difference in the lives of Londoners is incredibly fulfilling."
